Happy National Rat Catchers Day!

National Rat Catcher’s Day is celebrated on July 22 and is based on a folktale by the Brothers Grimm called the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The story was also told in a poem of the same name by Robert Browning which you can read here. (The poem is extremely amusing and I would recommend it.)

The story is that the town of Hamelin, Germany was experiencing a rat infestation. A strangely-dressed man appeared with a magic flute around his neck and offered to rid the town of rats for a thousand guilders. He did as promised, and the townsfolk watched as rats appeared from everywhere and followed him to their death. Since they believed the problem was resolved, they decided to not pay his fee.

The Pied Piper then returned. This time, he used his flute to lure the town’s children to follow him. The children never returned.

How to write about National Rat Catcher’s Day:

  • Read The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Brothers Grimm or The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning..
  • How do you feel about rats? Did you ever have a rat as a pet? Have you ever experienced a rat infestation?
  • Write about an encounter with a rat. I recall being a little freaked out when I saw several on the subway tracks during my first visit to New York City.
